Wrapping Up the Semester (and probably some presents too...)

Hello again and happy December! It's been a while since my last post... it's been pretty busy around here. As I'm writing this, I have two finals left to go before I'm headed home for winter break. I'm definitely looking forward catching up with friends and family, eating some tasty food, and just relaxing.

I can hardly believe that I'm almost done with my first semester here at OU – it has truly flown by. College has certainly been a big adjustment, but it's been smoother than I expected in many ways. I've made some great close friends and met lots of other interesting people. I love OU's campus and am excited to explore more around Norman and Oklahoma when I have a car next semester (!). I've enjoyed my classes and professors. On the whole, I'm super excited to come back next year and see what else is in store for me!

Here are some of my updates from the past few months:

  • The end of October was full of birthday and Halloween festivities. My friends and I dressed up as some of the characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and also went to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show at a local theater. It was definitely an experience!

  • My new favorite conversation starter is that I ~think~ I saw Joe Exotic (AKA the Tiger King) at a Chick-Fil-A in Ardmore, Oklahoma (about 20 minutes away from where his zoo is). Let me know if you'd like the full story, but my photographic evidence will be below ;)

  • Fall on campus was gorgeous! Lots of pretty leaves and OU's famous mums!

  • I also managed to briefly be on TV at the last home football game of the year. I clearly have star status around here now ;) OU's football scene has not been looking good lately, as we lost one of our big rivalry games along with our head coach and several players. Better things are in store for next season – or at least we're all hoping.

  • One of my newest endeavors is with a campus organization called the Big Event. This is a volunteer group that puts on a huge service project every year. Thousands of student and staff volunteers help at a number of job sites throughout the Norman and Oklahoma City communities. I'm a part of the Big Event's Operations Staff, the team that will help evaluate the job sites, organize supply and volunteer distribution, and help handle logistics in general. So far it's been a great way to connect with others, learn more about the community, and volunteer. I'm excited to see what we're able to accomplish next semester. (Side note: One of the group service projects we completed earlier this month was building houses with Habitat for Humanity. It was super rewarding and really improved my hammer skills.)

  • My trip home to ABQ for Thanksgiving was brief but great. It was so nice to spend a bit of time at home and reconnect. It felt pretty hectic – lots of people to see and things to do in not a lot of time! This was made up for by Grandma's excellent cooking (as per the usual) and lots of dog love too. Looking forward to all of that and more in just a few days!

  • Since Thanksgiving, it's truly just been a race to the finish line here. Wrapping up projects, speeches, and tests was a lot of work but has been a welcome distraction till I can come home again. So far all of my finals have gone well and things are looking good as I round out the semester.

  • One more big thing: I recently signed on my first apartment! Avery, Lilly, and I have decided to room together next school year and found an apartment complex that we love. It's close to campus, has some super nice amenities, and is fully furnished (yay!). I feel very grateful that this will be my first college apartment experience. One of many things to look forward to in 2022!

And that brings us up to date! Reflecting on this semester is definitely bittersweet. I've had a great time and made a lot of fun memories, but it's so hard to believe it's already over. There are also times that have been challenging – but that's a necessary part of navigating this new world. I'm happy I ended up here and am so thankful for all that I've been able to experience.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of you soon, and thank you all for your love and support these past few months. I couldn't have done it without you! And now... onwards and upwards to next year! Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season and the happiest of New Years.
